We produce one of the
best organic fertilizers around using two methods:
Worm composting and Hot composting. Our products are tested by the University of Massachusetts Soil Test Lab in Amhurst, MA.,on
a regular basis.
Food waste we collect consisting mostly of fruits, vegetables and horse manure
with some alpaca, rabbit and donkey manure also thrown in. We add
coffee grounds when needed and very small amounts of processed food and paper
products (less then 2% per weight).
VERMITOPIAS:
The worm boxes, or vermitopias, house thousands of red wrigglers. These
voracious worms are capable of eating 16 pounds of food per bin per day. We
have six vermitopias made out of metal frames and
plywood. Vegetable waste is mixed with horse, alpaca, chicken and rabbit
manure, and then it is dumped from the top of the box. The material that has
been processed by the worms is collected from the bottom of the vermitopia. This system (called 'continuous flow') saves
us from the hassles of separating worms from the finished product. Metal
string, woven back and forth across the box, supports the weight of about two
feet of moist vermicompost. Finished compost,
called worm castings, falls through the wires.
HOT COMPOSTING/ INDORE
METHOD:
The composting is done in barrel/s or boxes. Our methods,
also described here,
consist of layering materials: The first (bottom) layer is hard-to- compost
material such as twigs, palm leaves etc. The second layer is 10 cm. of vegetable
matter. The third layer , 4-5 cm is manure, followed
by the fourth layer of materials such as straw or old compost. Repeat
the layers until box is full. After 3 weeks, we break it down and start all
over.
